We have all at one time gone through experiences that have hurt us emotionally. But is there a good way to get over the pain in the emotions?

When we go through something difficult, all we hear is, “Wait and see, it’s getting better,” “You’ll get better soon,” and “Don’t be sad.” However, none of this helps us in the situation.

1. Admit that you are going through a difficult time

What do you do when you are having a hard time and someone asks you how you are feeling? Be honest: Usually you lie and tell them that everything is fine and sometimes you even say that you are fine as always.

However,  to overcome the pain in the emotions, you need to start telling the truth.

You may think that by saying such things you seek pity and thoughts like: “I do not seek the pity of others” may be circulating in your head.

However, it is about being honest with our surroundings and telling them how we really feel. We must acknowledge our pain instead of denying it or ignoring it.

So instead of avoiding your feelings, acknowledge them.

2. Where does your pain come from?

Your pain may come from something that is not completely clear to you. How did these feelings start? How did you feel? How have you reacted to the emotions so far?

By taking the time you need to analyze what has happened from different angles and uncover the different layers of the pain, you will discover its origin. Maybe it was created by childhood trauma or a loss you have not yet put behind you…

Start saying encouraging words to yourself

Once you have overcome the pain of the emotions and you begin to look back, you may discover how badly you have treated yourself. Maybe you’ve been thinking thoughts like, “You’re worthless,” “Everyone else is better than you,” “What do you have to complain about,” or maybe even “You’re an idiot.”

These thoughts do not help you, but when we go through difficult times, we often end up becoming very self-critical. Instead of helping us move forward, we are thrown into a cycle of depression, suffering, and even greater pain.

Therefore, it is important that you show yourself care and treat yourself with respect.

4. Appreciate people around you

When you are going through a difficult time, sometimes you just want to be alone and avoid other people. 

You can easily become very focused on your own pain. Therefore, it is important that you pay attention to the people who stay by your side.

They are the people who are by your side and showing mere presence makes you feel better. They are the ones who help you and pick you up when you are down.

You should appreciate these people who, even if they do not understand what you are going through, are still there for you.

5. Go to a psychologist when you have emotional pain

Many people are reluctant to go to a psychologist.  They believe that they are able to overcome their pain alone. Some even believe that they can learn from their experiences themselves. They may have deeply down a negative attitude to what it means to go to a psychologist.

A psychologist is a guide who offers us the necessary tools to overcome having pain in the emotions. They help us not to feel alone. They make us feel understood and help us to see the situation from a new perspective.

Going to a psychologist gives us a free space to breathe deeply. It helps us to put the painful feelings behind us and learn that everything will probably get better again. However, it is a process that takes some time.

The pain in the emotions does not have to develop into something that affects us so much that it ends up becoming part of our personality. One can get through the problem, get over it and get on with one’s life.
