Get rid of cockroaches: How to do it!

Homemade insecticides are a great way to remove cockroaches and keep them out of the house. But before applying any of these “treatments”, keep in mind that the state of cleanliness and tidiness in your home are the most important factors in combating this pest.

  • To begin with, you should seal any holes  around your dishwasher, sink, shower and tub. It also helps ensure that the kitchen and bathroom stay dry.
  • Clean the  areas below furniture frequently, such as chairs, beds, mattresses, pillows, rugs, and above all: the spaces between furniture and walls.
  • Empty and clean any drawers or shelves where you store books, binders, or clothes.
  • Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the  kitchen sink or having food left over  that will attract cockroaches. Also remember to seal your food containers, especially pet food.

Get rid of cockroaches: “home treatment”

baking soda
  • Bay leaves : a simple solution is to place chopped or crushed bay leaves in areas where you suspect the cockroaches live. They hate the smell of this herb and usually leave the area immediately.
  • Onions and boric acid : this treatment is very popular thanks to the fact that they are both very effective and very cheap. Make a paste using a finely chopped, medium-sized onion, half a cup of wheat flour, a little water or beer, a pinch of sugar, and 3 to 4 teaspoons of boric acid powder (you can find it at hardware stores). Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and use a spoon to spread it all over your home, wherever you suspect the cockroaches are moving. We recommend that you keep this mixture away from pets as it can be toxic to them.
  • Baking soda and sugar : mix a cup of baking soda with a cup of sugar and spread this powder mixture all over the house. Cockroaches are attracted to sugar and will eat the mixture. Baking soda will cause gas bubbles inside and kill them.
  • Borax : this natural ingredient is often used to make soap for washing powder. All you have to do is sprinkle borax powder around your house, especially in areas where you suspect the cockroaches are hiding. When they go through borax, it will dehydrate and kill them. Cockroaches cannot hold on to moisture if their shell is damaged.
  • Katurt : Sprinkle a little katurt around your house. Katurt has the same effect as bay leaves – cockroaches hate the smell and they will stay away.
